In 1834, William George Horner created a device called a Zoetrope that allowed animated people to be created. This device revolved around an instrument that could change the images from one image. Emile Reynaud, an 1876 inventor of theatrical projection, adapted this concept. He was the first to start animation using celluloid ribbons.

Sullivan-Bluth Studios

Although Sullivan-Bluth Studios are not as well-known and celebrated as Disney, they have made a significant contribution to the history animation. Don Bluth, who established the company in 1977, was a Disney animator. He contributed to many of the studio's greatest works. His human touch is what gave animation its unique character. Sullivan-Bluth Studios' animated people are now cherished in homes everywhere.

Sullivan-Bluth Entertainment began life as Don Bluth Studios. Morris Sullivan, a broker in mergers and acquisitions who was an enthusiast for traditional animation, co-founded the studio. Bluth's studio filed bankruptcy in 1985. Morris Sullivan (a financial consultant) stepped in to save the company. Bluth and Sullivan worked together on a feature-length cartoon in the 1990s and a Japanese park attraction.

Hanna-Barbera Productions

Hanna-Barbera produced a series cartoons for children in the 1960s with partners the GAB (Ruby-Spears) In addition to its successful Saturday morning cartoons, Hanna-Barbera created many feature films. Despite Hanna-Barbera's difficulties, Hanna-Barbera produced a majority of the American television cartoons. Filmation and Hanna-Barbera were so rivals that Fred Silverman gave Hanna-Barbera the Saturday morning cartoon slot in the early 1970s. Hanna-Barbera began to produce all of its cartoons at-house in late 1970s/early 1980s.

After the merger, Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros. Hanna-Barbera was unable to produce specials and shows, so animation continued production. Warner Bros. continue to produce some legacy properties from Hanna-Barbera such as Scooby-Doo & The Monster Machine. The Hanna-Barbera trademark is still present on select projects. Although Hanna-Barbera cartoons were stopped by the company, copyright holder for many of these programs is not.

Felix, Sullivan's character

After a series, Sullivan's character Felix saw a resurgence in comic strips, a musical homage and in a newspaper strip. These animated cartoons remained in demand for many years and would have stayed so if Sullivan was alive longer. However, Sullivan became addicted to alcohol and had syphilis problems, which led him to end the series in 1931. Joe Oriolo revived the character and made it a TV series. Sullivan's estate never went to Messmer with the Felix cartoons.

While Messmer and Sullivan shared some aspects of the cartoons, the Felix cartoon wouldn’t have been as successful without Sullivan’s marketing efforts. But Sullivan gave Felix his name and personality. Messmer's biographical sketch concludes that the cartoons would be better if Sullivan had made them. In Japan, Felix is one the most beloved characters.

Studio Sullivan

A fascinating tale of Felix, the cat, being created in Sullivan’s studio for animators is told. Most animation histories gloss over Sullivan’s past. However, the truth is that he was a wildcat renegade who did not care about the rules or protected his intellectual property. Sullivan was born in Paddington, Sydney in Australia. He immigrated to the United States in 1911.

Sullivan came to the United States in 1914 to work for the McClure Syndicate. He also edited Marriner’s comic strips, including Sambo's Funny Noises and McClure. 1914 saw Sullivan join Raoul Barre's animation studio. He worked on the film adaptations of Helen Bannerman’s children's series Sambo and his Funny Noises.

How To

How to get a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame

In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.

To become a HWOF member, you need to submit a name to Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They then submit your details to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque is attached on a concrete base at the star.

You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce will then pay $25. This money is forwarded to the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles.

The department issues the Hollywood Chamber of commerce a check, payable to it. The check is sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The other half goes to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove your name from this list.

How old must one be to get a HWOF star

When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. A person must be present at the time of receiving a star. After receiving a star, one may still be nominated again after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce can place a memorial marker next to the star, if there aren't any living relatives.

Why not use a new street, instead of staring at everyone?

The HWOF was not created to be a historical landmark. It honors those who made history through film.

What happened with the stars that were stolen? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250 and 300 lbs. This makes it approximately 4 tons!
